Beziers is a town in Languedoc, in the southwest of France. The town is a sub-prefecture in the Herault department, with a population around 70,000. With its population, Beziers is the second largest town in the department of Herault and the fourth of the region Languedoc-Roussillon.

Every August Beziers hosts the famous Feria de Beziers, centered around bullfighting. A million visitors are attracted each year to the five-day event. But Beziers isn’t a popular destination only for the Feria. The summer events of Beziers are sure to leave you with some wonderful memories.

Beziers resembles more a Spanish town then a French one, due to the big promotion of bullfighting and the exhilarating festivities. The cuisine is also a little bit more Spaniard as the local dishes will make you doubt that you are not in Spain.

History & Civilization

The site has been occupied since Neolithic times, before the influx of Celts. Roman Betarra was on the road that linked Provence with Iberia. The Romans re-founded the city as a new colony for veterans in 36/35 BC and called it Colonia Julia Baeterrae Septimanorum. Stones from the Roman amphitheater were used to construct the city wall during the 3^rd century.

Saint Nazaire de Beziers

The cathedral of Saint-Nazaire Beziers is the largest Gothic monument in the city of Beziers. The cathedral is built on the west side of the old medieval city on a hill overlooking the plain of the river Orb spread below.
